BRIEF
Design sustainable products which support pollinating insects whilst also creating socially attractive neighbourhoods, thus helping cities become resilient in the face of urbanisation.
SUMMARY
The result of this brief, assigned to us by the EU funded Augmented Urbans in collaboration with Gavlegårdarna, was a system of hexagonal corten steel modules. The modules can be assembled in endless ways, and contain insertions for lighting, 'insect hotels' and flowerbeds.
Augmented Urbans is a EU financed long term project which focusses on creating more resilient cities around the Baltic Sea. In the Gävle branch of the project, we were invited to collaborate and present ideas on how to improve the sustainability of Sätra and Hemsta, two of the city's suburbs.
We took part in several lectures from experts on what cities and urban environments need to be resilient and sustainable. The main take-aways being that we need to accomodate our pollinators through flowering plants (not lawns) as well as creating environments that encourage social interactions and neighbourhood participation with, for example, gardening.
We began workshopping and ideating with quick thumbnail sketches on Post-Its, which the three of us then presented to eachother and discussed. We repeated this process, and categorised the results.
Finally, we voted on our favourites and discarded the low scoring ideas. This created the foundation for the synthesis of the final concept.
